Feature Forecasting in the US Market

In this month's insight, we shall be doing something a little different by providing an example of forecasting for 5 key features across comfort, convenience, and connectivity from 2019, up to and including the year 2024 - all forecasting is based on historical data exclusively on VehiclePlannerPlus and is intended to illustrate the power of historical data, and to demonstrate the potential use cases of using the data to look forward, not just the present or the past. This forecast is intended to be a starting point and utilizes a broad stroke approach to predict a handful of features' future adoption in the market. To learn more about our data, assumptions, or enquire about a custom forecast please feel free to reach out to us.

The following 5 features have been analyzed in this newsletter:

  • Head-up display
  • SiriusXM
  • Camera based rear view mirror
  • Surround view system
  • Leather primary upholstery

In this forecasting, both availability and penetration rate data will be used and calculated.

The below chart showcases the historical and forecasted data for the availability of the 5 features mentioned, please use the drop-down menu to view the desired feature on the chart.

The below chart showcases the historical and forecasted data for the penetration rate of the 5 features mentioned, please use the drop-down menu to view the desired features on the chart.

Using the historical and forecasted data outlined above, we can get a general idea of how it may culminate in the market over the next 3 years. Below is a chart showing the market average availability and penetration rate for each feature from 2019 to 2024, this demonstrates how VehiclePlannerPlus data anticipates the growth or fall of the features in question.

From this chart, there are a couple of quick takeaways:

  • Leather primary upholstery appears to be trending downwardt. With heightened environmental awareness and improvements in material science and material development, the need for natural leather could dwindle to only the most premium of vehicles. One theory is that the introduction of higher quality faux leather and other leather alternates will drive the demand for natural leather down considerably.
  • We'd expect music in the car  to remain a staple. In the short term, we predict services such as SiriusXM will continue to feature large availability and penetration percentages. Improvements in in-vehicle internet access and streaming could also impact services such as SiriusXM, with customers opting to use other streaming services instead of satellite and online radio, as autonomy becomes even more available and competent towards L4, we may also see forms of entertainment while driving to become more involved, beyond just audio.
